Why do people put “Sent from my iPad” at the end of their email?

A client of mine recently asked me why he occasionally sees “Sent from my iPad” at the end of people’s email. My first answer was the completely obvious—the email was sent from an iPad.

But then I went on to explain the “real” reasons. The first was that this “feature” is automatically enabled on an iPad right out of the box. You can find the setting using the screenshot below:

As to why anyone would want this included with every email? Well, it kind of serves as an excuse (let’s call it a disclaimer) for super short and/or typo-laden emails and replies. In other words, if someone sends you a short email or email reply with a bunch of typos in it, rather than think they need to go back to elementary school English, you let them off the hook because it was sent from their iPad.

It’s simple to change using the iPad’s settings as shown above but most people never do. Some even use it as a sort of status symbol to tell the world how great they are because they have an iPad.

And don’t think for a second Apple doesn’t love the fact that most people never change it and thus are giving them free advertising with every outbound email.

Are you an iPad user? If so, do you still include the “Sent from my iPad” in your emails? Tell me by leaving a comment below.
