Would You Put an iPad in Your Kitchen?

iPad in kitchen

I’ve often thought it would be pretty cool to have a computer right in the kitchen but it’s completely impractical. Cords going everywhere, food all over the keyboard, not to mention the tremendous space it would take up. I don’t know why it never occurred to me the iPad could be the solution to these problems.

It took me stumbling upon this page on Amazon.com to finally realize it.

I mean, think about it. No cords to mess with. The keyboard is part of the screen, which is covered in glass so no food would get stuck in it. And it hardly takes up any space. It’s perfect!

How Would I Use It?

I can easily think of a dozen uses for an iPad in the kitchen but I’ll name just a few here.

  • Pulling up recipes while cooking or baking. No more digging through paper-based cookbooks.
  • Adding items to your digital grocery list the moment you realize you’re about to run out of something.
  • Publicly displaying the household calendar so you never forget where anyone is supposed to be or who is coming to dinner that night.
  • Displaying a slideshow of pictures so you can be reminded how much you love your children even if they don’t take their dishes over to the sink or put them in the dishwasher.
  • Listening to music. Italian music on spaghetti night anyone?
  • Catching up on your favorite shows while waiting for that water to boil. Or following along with a cooking show (is this even possible?)

As I said, I could go on and on. But what I really want to know is if anyone else thinks having an iPad in the kitchen is a great idea. So what do you think? Leave a comment below and let me know.

I use my iPad in the kitchen, although I don’t have any fancy holders. I should get something to hold it, because it can kind of get in the way.

I use it to look up recipes (especially those from America’s Test Kitchen), or ingredient substitutions. I also listen to music, or more often, music videos on Vevo. I also make hand-painted chocolates, and usually have a movie or TV show going on Netflix on the iPad when I do.

I use my iPad in the kitchen almost every day, since almost my entire recipe collection is stored in Springpad and my grocery list in Ziplist. I place it in a large ziploc for protection whenever I’m cooking something really messy, like bread. I’ve never seen the holders before now, though.

Yet another reason for me to want an iPad. Especially given the size of my tiny kitchen. Anything on the counter just gets in the way!

When I won my iPad I wanted a case and a stand. I immediately hit TJ Maxx where they had a metal stand for $7.99 by Targus thatis adjustable and very sturdy-solid. I also found a neoprene case for $14.99 by ACME MADE. My lesson was learned, check your local discount store first. I use my iPad in the kitchen often and the stand works just great, it also has rubber stoppers on the bottom so it won’t slide off the counter either!

Might be a good use for a 7″ iPad… I’ve just got to get over my old-schoolness… whenever I ask my wife where the recipe is, and she says “open in a tab on my iPhone” I find myself emailing myself the URL, printing it, and running up a flight of stares to get it out of the printer… Just something nice about paper… mainly it doesn’t go to sleep and can make notes on it…

You all might have just convinced me to start using my iPad in the kitchen more!
