How can I keep track of what movies I’ve watched? [ASK MR. NOOBIE]

QUESTION: I’ve been searching for something to no avail. I’ve been very frustrated and quite surprised that I can’t find it. See, I’m a Film Girl. I love movies of all kinds (well, most, anyway) and I have seen countless films. So many, in fact, that I often come across a film that looks interesting, so I pop the popcorn and get comfy… only to realize ten minutes into it that I’ve already seen it. I am looking for an app that allows me to *easily* record films I’ve seen, and perhaps even rate them, so that this won’t happen again.

I use my IMDB app almost daily, and I know I can add things to my Watchlist there, but I want a separate WatchED list! I have also come across other apps that allow you to catalog your DVD collection by scanning barcodes, but if I don’t have the barcode of a movie I’ve watched on tv, that’s no good to me, either.

I have searched both Google and iTunes App Store for a solution. The only other place I can think of to turn is to YOU! Any suggestions? – Heather from Dublin, Ireland

ANSWER: Heather, your question is especially exciting to me for a couple of reasons. For one, you live in Dublin, Ireland which holds a special place in my heart since my wife and I toured Ireland a little over a year ago. It was one of the most memorable trips I have ever taken!

Second, I didn’t have a good answer for you right offhand so it forced me to go looking for one. And I love a good challenge coupled with finding out about new services I have previously never heard of. Plus, as a bonus, I’m a big movie buff myself so in a sense, answering your question was as helpful to me as it will hopefully be to you.

On to your question. You seemed very focused on finding an app to solve your problem but I wonder if you would also be open to using a website instead of a standalone app. I ask that because I struggled too to find an app but I did find some good websites that look like they are the perfect solution to your movie dilemma.

Here’s a list of what I found:

All three of the above sites offer the ability to catalog movies you’ve watched although I have to tell you, after browsing through the sites for a while, iCheckMovies is my clear favorite.

I particularly like it because it not only allows you to check off the movies you’ve seen but it also starts to recommend movies that suit your taste. Furthermore, there are tons of movies lists provided on the site that group movies together with a common theme. This should provide yet another avenue for you to find a hidden gem of a movie that you might have missed otherwise.

I already signed up for my free account. If you decide to join yourself (it’s free), look me up. My user name is parcelwitch. It might be a bit selfish, but I can’t wait to see what fun movies you have watched that I may have missed!

P.S. If you are reading this and know of an app that would accomplish the same thing as iCheckMovies or performs the same type of functions, please leave a comment below along with the name of the app.

  1. Heather!

Hi Patric!  Wow, what great help you are!  I checked out all three sites you mentioned here, and at this point, I have to agree with you that iCheckMovies is probably the best.  Coollector looks cool too, but requires a download, which I wasn’t particularly interested in doing.  But I have spent a couple of days playing around with iCheckMovies, and I love it!  I’ve already added several hundred checks to my profile, thanks to the HUGE lists on the site.  Yay!

You’re right, though, I was looking for an app that would allow this same functionality, simply because I always have my phone with me when I’m watching movies, and I always look up what I’m watching on IMDb for information about the cast, director, plot and trivia, as well as user reviews.  I actually discovered something.  My IMDb app needed an update, which I downloaded.  One of the newer features is the ability to make lists within the app.  It isn’t perfect, but I now have a ‘Viewed’ list that I can add films to as I see them, and I can consult the list if I am not sure if I’ve seen something.  What I would really like is for the database to check my list for me, so that when I look up a movie I can immediately whether or not it’s on my Viewed list.  As it is, I can try to add it, and the app will tell me if it’s already there, so that works too.  As I said, not perfect, but much better than what I had before, which was nothing!  :)

Now I just need to wait until iCheckMovies develops an app!  Thanks so very much for your help (and I sent you friend request)!

Heather, you can use your own ratings in IMDB (the app or web site) for this.  When you look up a movie when logged in to the app you can tap “Rate this” (or click “Your rating” on the web site) to rate the movie.  Then in the future when you look up the movie, if “Rate this” is replaced with your rating, you know you’ve seen the movie.  You can also see a list of what movies you’ve rated (and therefore seen) in Your Lists -> Your Ratings.
