Can I upgrade to Windows 10 from Vista?

Ask Mr. NoobieQUESTION: Can Windows 10 be downloaded to a laptop with Vista? – Roselle P from Franklin, Indiana

ANSWER: I assume by asking if Windows 10 can be downloaded you also mean you want to run the installation and upgrade your laptop from Vista to Windows 10. The short answer as to whether or not you can do this is yes but please read on to see why I wouldn’t recommend it.

Vista to Windows 10 upgrade isn’t free

One reason I wouldn’t recommend it is that the upgrade is not free. Only users of Windows 7 and Windows 8 can install the Windows 10 upgrade for free. Vista users, such as yourself, will have to shell out $119.99 from the Microsoft Store ($119.00 on Amazon) for the full version of Windows 10.

Another reason is that your laptop running Vista may not meet the hardware requirements of Windows 10. And even if it does, the hardware would most likely be severely underpowered for Windows 10.

This means you may potentially have to sink more money into your laptop for more memory or other hardware upgrades. By the time you are finished with the cost of Windows 10 plus the hardware upgrades, you likely will have spent a few hundred dollars.

New laptop will be more cost efficient

Compare this to the cost of a new laptop, which for an average model, will cost around $400-$600. The new laptop will come with Windows 10 pre-installed, have a faster processor, a bigger hard drive and likely more memory. And everything on the laptop will be guaranteed to work with Windows 10.

As you can see, while technically possible to pay for and do the upgrade yourself, it is much more cost efficient to either stick with Windows Vista until your laptop dies or to trade in your Vista laptop for a brand new Windows 10 one.

I do agree that if you’re running a Vista machine, it is time for an upgrade, however I’d think that if a machine were powerful enough to run Windows Vista, then it will run Windows 10 fine. If its under powered for Windows 10, then its underpowered for Windows Vista. After Vista was when Microsoft started the work to make Windows more efficient. Windows 7, 8, and 10 each had lesser requirements than its predecessor.
