If you’re a WordPress user running a personal site or blog, then the plugin is free. Akismet comes pre-installed with your site through the Basic plan. However, if you own a commercial site or you’re a professional blogger, the Plus plan is right for you. At $5 per site monthly, it offers spam protection, advanced stats, and priority support. Finally, the Enterprise plan costs $50 a month for unlimited sites and gives a wider protection for multi site installations or larger networks.
How Does Akismet Work?
Akismet is a cloud-based spam filtering system that constantly processes and examines data in real time from millions of sites. This plugin uses a unique algorithm to analyze and establish information as useful or spam. With over 52 million downloads, we can assume that Akismet is the most popular plugin of its kind in the market. Granted, you will still need to use an API key to activate the software tool on your site.

Even though the plugin has many promising features, a number of WordPress users no longer recommend it. Issues on false positive spam, flagging real comments, and excessive bandwidth use turned off loyal subscribers. Nowadays, free, more efficient plugins are eyed as the best for Comment Spam protection. If you find that Akismet isn’t the right fit, AntiSpam Bee consistently ranks as a mighty alternative.
Through your WordPress admin dashboard, select “Plugins” then “Add New.” Search for Akismet through the search bar and click on it. Confirm that it is Automattic’s Akismet, then click on “Install Now.” Click “OK” when a confirmation to install new plugin prompts.
On the next page, click on “Activate Plugin.” Once activated, go to:
WordPress Dashboard > Plugins > Settings > Akismet
If you have Jetpack installed, you will find Akismet under Jetpack.
If you already have your “API Key” manually enter it on the field. If not, click on “Get Your API Key” button to find it on a new window. If you’ve got “Jetpack” installed and want to use the same key, select on Use this Akismet account. Otherwise, you may select “Manually Enter” and “API Key.” Another option is the “Register a Different Email Address” button, which will generate a new API Key.
Now you’re good to go!
