Ask Mr. NoobieQUESTION: Can you use an iTunes card to purchase time on your smartphone? – Jesse from Monticellow, New York

ANSWER: As far as I know, an iTunes gift card is only good for purchasing apps (or in-app purchases), music, videos and books through Apple. I’ve never seen a case where you can use your iTunes gift card to purchase time—which I assume you mean minutes on a pre-paid plan—for your smartphone.

Further, I would caution you to be careful if anyone ever asks you to pay for something using an iTunes gift card. This is a popular scam criminals use to steal money from you without using a credit card which can be easily traced. Once you give someone your iTunes gift card number, there’s no getting it back.

Your best course of action is to sell your iTunes gift card for cash on a website like Raise or Gift Card Granny. Then use the cash you receive to purchase time on your smartphone.
