When Twitter asks “What are you doing?” one man replies “I’m having a baby”
Whenever I talk about Twitter to noobies, they always look at me with that "what is it again?" or "I just don't get it" look on their face. Even after I explain what it is and how people use it, they still can't figure out why it so popular.
Thanks to a series events that happened almost a week ago, I now have a better answer when people ask me what Twitter is. I'm going to tell them, it's for having a baby.
I'm able to say this because a friend whom I follow on Twitter (for privacy sake I am not mentioning the name or user), just tweeted his entire first-time-dad birthing experience.
I happened to be on my computer when this all started and found myself anxiously waiting for each new update. As you will see, the tweets spanned over 24 hours.
What having a baby looks like on Twitter
Here are some of the highlights of the tweets, used with permission from the new daddy himself. Please note that I've blanked out some of the more personal information with *****.
I can't believe I'm gonna be a dad today... surreal
I can hear my baby's hiccups on the monitor right now. Baby hiccups are the one of the cutest sounds known to mankind.
Gonna lay down now and try to get SOME rest before we parachute into crazytown. Contractions ~3 min apart.
3cm dilated, 75% effaced. Taking quite a long time, but at least we are making some progress. More pain. Very tough. Been at hosp for 12 hrs
I <3 nurses... just sayin'
5-6 cm, still 75% effaced. Making progress. Slow but steady.
Alright, gonna try to get some shut eye. Looks like ***** will be the birthday :)
progress has slowed down. waiting another hour and then having a csection. approaching 24 hours since water broke.
about to walk in to surgery for csection. keep us in your prayers! I look goofy in my outfit. no tweets until after!
we have a baby!!! 5 lbs 15 oz! she is in the NICU now. have to wait an hour to go visit her. cant wait to see her again. ***** was amazing!
Congratulations to both mommy and daddy!

This is rather fabulous. I’ve noticed a lot of pregnant mommy tweeters lately tweeting their pregnancy woes and those who are trying to get pregnant tweeting their highs and lows. Twitter = the new reproductive communication tool.

@Queen of Free: You may have just coined a new phrase, “the new reproductive communication tool” :)
