What’s up with IE 9 and Google Calendar? [ASK MR. NOOBIE™]

QUESTION: I downloaded IE9 the other day and just starting yesterday (or noticed yesterday) I discovered that my Google Calendar does not work right—editing it to be specific—trying to add an event or update or open. So I fired up firefox and it works perfectly. Got any ideas (besides the fact that IE 9 is screwing it up)? - Colleen K. from Indianapolis

ANSWER: My first reaction when I read your question was to wonder why you are still using Internet Explorer (IE) as your default browser. While IE used to be the top dog in town, more and more people have jumped ship to Mozilla's Firefox or Google's Chrome browsers for the speed increase and availability of custom plug-ins.

But that's really neither here nor there. Millions of people still use Internet Explorer so your question is perfectly valid. And I'm guessing the problem has to do with a compatibility issue between Google and Internet Explorer 9.

To fix the problem, try clicking the little Compatibility View icon to the right of the address bar.

Internet Explorer Compatibility View

This will display your Google Calendar as if you were viewing it in a previous version of Internet Explorer.

And the good news is that you don't have to click this icon every time. Internet Explorer will remember the option for every future visit to the web site.

  • Unfortunately, some people are still stuck using IE for work purposes (I’m one of them)…

This is a handy tip, and one I’ll probably need when my office’s fine IT people *cough* decide to ‘upgrade’ us again. Thanks!

  • Just an FYI to Penenuel and anyone else out there.  I jumped ship to Google Chrome and I won’t go back!  Just an FYI to Penemuel and anyone else out there...they have extensions you can get for Chrome that allow you to view a web page in IE format right from the browser.  I too have many web sites that will only work with IE, but I never have to leave my Chrome browser, which is much faster and much more secure!

  • @Brett—thanks! I actually have that on my FF at home, but at work they frown on things like that, so I’m stuck. :\ Didn’t know Chrome had one too—I’m going to add that at home tonight!

  • No problem!  I’ve tried a few and Chrome IE Tab Multi is the one I think works the best.

  • Brett, thanks for the great advice on the IE plugins for Firefox and Chrome!
