What ever happened to free color television?
Technology is a funny thing. One day a new technology is living on the bleeding edge and another it’s old hat. I think of this whenever I drive by an old-fashioned motel. Many moons ago, motels would boast on a big sign outside of the motel that they offer free color television. Now you would laugh if the person behind the counter told you color television was included in your night’s stay.
A little later the signs changed to “Free Cable” and eventually “Free HBO”. Now come on, what motel these days doesn’t offer cable television as well as some sort of premium or on-demand television programming?
No, it doesn’t end there. Along came “Free Internet” or “Free Wi-Fi”. Once again, this has become a non-factor. Almost every motel or hotel has wi-fi included and if they don’t, there are probably a handful of places nearby that do.
So what can we expect next? Well, I am personally waiting for “Free High Definition Television” on the sign board of the next motel I drive by. But they better get that sign up quick because by 2011 I’ll already be muttering “big deal” under my breath.
