WFYI special to answer your digital television questions

Most people are getting a little tired of hearing about the upcoming switchover to digital television next February. But irritability with television advertisements is no substitute for actually knowing if you are prepared for the transition to digital television.

So if you have any televisions in your house that are hooked up to a central antenna or individual rabbit ears and you haven't already taken the necessary steps to prepare for digital television, read on!

Local Indianapolis PBS television affiliate, WFYI, will be airing Get Ready for Digital TV on Thursday, December 18, at 8 pm. The broadcast will combine a series of informative "how-to" segments hosted by This Old House's Norm Abram and Kevin O'Connor, with a collection of timely DTV questions and conundrums submitted by Central Indiana viewers. Lloyd Wright, President and CEO of WFYI Public Broadcasting, will anchor the hour-long special from WFYI's television studios. He'll be accompanied by a team of experts, including a representative from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC); Richard Miles, WFYI's Vice Programming of Television Programming; and Steve Jensen, WFYI's Vice President of Broadcast Operations.

Here's the part where you get involved. In advance of the December 18 broadcast, local viewers can submit their questions to the station at wfyi.org/dtv or by calling (317) 636-2020. You can also learn more about DTV online by visiting wfyi.org/dtvFAQ.

If you are not in the Indianapolis viewing area, check your local PBS affiliate for showings in your area.

  • Hi Patric! Just a note re: the DTV switch. (If you’ve already covered converter boxes & I missed it, then.... “Never mind!” : )
A local TV station here in Utah ran a digital test a few weeks ago. It was AMAZING to hear how many people had purchased converter boxes which appeared to be fine, but didn’t work during the test! Further, the station was flooded with calls from people who had purchased boxes which:  never powered up, shut down randomly (taking all TV service down), had intermittent signal at best, etc. Worse, most of them reported being denied when trying to return or exchange the boxes! The station didn’t recommend a brand name, just said to “be careful” when buying. I would add to check the return/exchange policy when buying. I have Dish Net, so I think I’m covered; just thought I’d pass along the info!

  • @Stacy Wow, maybe we’re all not as ready as we think we are for the conversion. Thanks for passing along the info!

  • Hey Patric—I thought for sure you’d take the opportunity to plug the DTV conversion project that you helped us with. Please invite your blog readers to take the Digital TV Connection Project—with information session curriculum prepared by Mr. Noobie himself—to their churches and community organizations to help other members make the switch. Your readers can find it at http://cac.uindy.edu.

  • @Amy Thanks for the reminder. That would have been a good tie-in. I’ll make a mental note to make the DTV conversion project one of my first blog posts of the new year.
