If you haven't heard the buzz lately, 3D television is headed our way. As early as this summer if you have DIRECTV. I witnessed something amazing today. On a recent visit with my parents, my mom realized one minute before the Olympics kicked off in prime-time that one of her regularly recorded shows was going to prevent the Olympics from recording on TiVo (it's a single tuner TiVo) that night. Without missing a beat, my mom grabbed the TiVo remote control, brought up the menu, browsed by channel, found the Olympics, hit record, acknowledged that it would be ok to cancel her reguarly recorded show, hit the menu again, browsed to another channel, found a later, repeat showing of her reguarly recorded… Continue reading...

This morning I helped a client of mine get his new Blu-ray player configured to access the Internet so he could watch streaming movies from his Netflix account. Pretty cool stuff. While I was there he also asked me if I could help him learn how to use his DVR. But I told him flat out I couldn't help him with that. After a brief pause for comedic effect, I told him the reason was because he didn't have a DVR. In my client's defense, it can be difficult to distinguish a cable box from a DVR by looks alone.… Continue reading...

Last weekend I spent the night at a Marriott hotel. The room had a beautiful flat panel 32" television which I've actually somewhat come to expect. But what I didn't expect was this little device sitting next to the television: This is a dream come true for a techie traveler like myself. Basically, this little doo-hickey allows me to hook u just about any type of gadget I want to the television. Blu-ray player on your laptop? Hook it up with an HDMI cable to the Digital Video In port. Use the television as a giant computer monitor? No problem.… Continue reading...

Earlier this week I wrote about my love/hate relationship with DIRECTV. Actually, mostly my hate relationship. But I promised myself I would return to the topic to discuss the love relationship. So in this blog post, I will concentrate only on what I like about my new DIRECTV setup.
