Is it just me or has there been very little press at the second go-round of switching from analog to digital television? Personally, I've barely heard a word. Yeah, I saw a couple of commercials on television reminding me that June 12 is the new date but nothing like I saw earlier this year when the date was still February 17. I'm guessing the reason for this is that the switchover to digital television, like Y2K, has been beat to death. So I'm going to do my part and leave it alone as well. R.I.P. analog television Just know that… Continue reading...

I've been predicting for some time now that the distribution of television shows over the airwaves will be a thing of the past sooner than later. It will be replaced by Internet (or whatever the Internet will be called at this time) distribution. It just makes sense. There's only so much programming that can travel over the airwaves in any given city and it is bound by city limits. Everyone already knows I love my TiVo. Bring up the topic in conversation with me and it's hard to get me to shut up. But here's a little benefit to TiVo I've never really talked about before--it's a cliffhanger killer. Television show producers are famous for cliffhangers. They are what keep you coming back next week, right? Well, with TiVo cliffhangers are irrelevant to me since it's not at all uncommon for me to let my favorite shows queue up for 5, 10 or even 15 weeks. When the mood hits me, I start with the oldest episode and watch… Continue reading...

Digital video recorders like TiVo have totally revolutionized the way we watch television. We now can watch television whenever we want and darn near anywhere we want. But that doesn't mean the technology is flawless. Take for instance the question I often receive in my classes when I talk about TiVo. The question is whether or not TiVo is "smart enough" to know when the President is speaking or a football game is running late which causes television shows to be off their standard programming schedule. My answer is no, TiVo is not that smart, unless the program interruption or… Continue reading...

Everyone has probably seen those giant bins of bargain DVDs at superstores like Wal-Mart. I saw one today that had the DVDs priced at 2 for $9.99. Usually these bins are full of DVDs that are of little or no interest to me but I am still drawn to them nonetheless. I guess my curiosity always gets the best of me. The 2 for $9.99 bin I saw today was no exception. I couldn't resist digging through the bin to see if there might be a hidden gem somewhere in the pile. Suprisingly, I didn't have to dig very far… Continue reading...
