I am a big fan of the Logitech Harmony One remote. It is the one remote control I can truly call "babysitter proof". Or to relate more to my audience, "noobie proof". A few weeks ago my Harmony One remote started acting up. Buttons would work, then they wouldn't. Then they would. This went on for a few day until pressing one button would "stick" and cause the button to repeat its behavior over and over and over again. Finally, the remote completely died. Being a techie, I went through my usual arsenal of troubleshooting only to declare a few… Continue reading...

Long-time followers of my blog know that I dumped DIRECTV 18 months ago in favor of over-the-air antenna-only programming. It started as an experiment but quickly became a permanent solution for me. I say permanent but I really mean permanent for 18 months. Because today DIRECTV is coming to my house to reconnect my satellite service. The reason I went back can be summed up in word... sports. It's not that there wasn't sports on the over-the-air local channels I received. It's more that I didn't grow up in Indiana. I grew up in Wisconsin. And all of the years… Continue reading...

So I see that DISH Network is trying to trick people into believing convince people it has every bit as good of an NFL selection as DIRECTV. Advertising like this really bothers me. Back in my satellite days, I had DIRECTV for 11 years, mainly because they were the exclusive provider of what they call the NFL Sunday Ticket. The NFL Sunday Ticket virtually guarantees you will see your favorite NFL team's game (although NFL blackout rules can still throw a monkey wrench in this). Being a Packers fan in a Hoosier state, this was a dream come true for… Continue reading...

You're probably growing tired of me telling you how wonderful TiVo is but I have actually come up with an improvement to TiVo that would make it even better. Today's Technology I'd Like to See (TILTS) is portable TiVo. Yes, I know you can already transfer your TiVo shows to portable video devices such as your laptop or an iPod Touch but I'm talking about simpler portability. What if there was a drive bay on your TiVo that housed a portable hard drive with all of your recorded and downloaded shows? Whenever you leave the house you could just pull… Continue reading...

Quick. Close your eyes and count the number of remote controls you use to turn on all of the necessary components to watch television in your house. Is it one? Two? Three or more? Or maybe you have one of those all-in-one remote controls that can handle several different components. Now think again. Who in your house knows how to use this remote control (or these remote controls) better than anyone else in the house? Those with kids may have to think hard about this one. Shockingly, the answer in my house is still me. But barely. Twice since purchasing… Continue reading...
