My reliance on my computer and Internet connection is downright scary. Even so, most of the time I don't give it a second thought. That is until the power goes out. This happened to me last week during a mild thunderstorm. Thankfully, my UPS gave me enough time to save my files and shut down my computer. I waited for about 10 minutes hoping the power would come back on but it didn't. I thought about powering up my laptop but since my cable modem and wireless router both require power I wasn't going to get very far without an…

Noobies are notoriously awful with password administration. Most of them use the same user name and password for every secure web site. Even worse, noobies love to use easy to crack passwords like the word password, their pet's name or some variance of their children's names. And the software companies aren't helping either. My sister called me from a Circuit City store last week. She was ready to buy a brand new laptop computer and wanted to know whether or not it was a good deal. No, I'm talking about "borrowing" a little juice from your neighbor or place of employment when they're not looking. I say this because plug-in hybrid automobiles are just around the corner. Toyota has plans to release the plug-in version of…

Yesterday I was having lunch at my new favorite coffee shop when a man sitting at the table next to me asked me if I knew who sung the song that just played on the radio. I wish he had asked me while the song was still playing. I would have jumped at the chance to whip out my iPhone and show off the song-recognizing Shazam application. But the song was already over so I was put in a Shazam-less situation. But that wasn't going to stop this techie. Not even after this man's futile attempts to actually sing the…
