When I bought our minivan nearly a year ago, I turned down the option for in-dash GPS. The idea of having GPS available at all times was attractive to me but everything else about it killed the deal. For starters, in-dash GPS adds upwards of $2,000 to the price of the car. Compare that to a huge selection of portable GPS devices that I can get on Amazon for under (sometimes way under) $200. And with a portable GPS I can take it with me from car to car. I've even been known to take it with me on vacation…

It's been a long time since I've done a new entry for my often well-received Technology I'd Like to See (TILTS) series but inspiration finally hit me. I just upgraded to a new GPS navigation unit and was happy to see that the estimated arrival time now adjusted itself to the destination's local time, much like the listed arrival times when you travel by airplane. I cringe every time I hear about a bank giving away a free digital camera or other consumer electronics product when you open a new account. Mainly because I know that whatever they give you is either going to be a piece of junk or an outdated model purchased in bulk from some clearance outlet. That's why when I drove by a billboard today for Key Bank that mentioned a free GPS for opening a new account, I couldn't wait to get home to find out which GPS model it was so I could prove my point to my readers.…
