It's been a long time since I've done a new entry for my often well-received Technology I'd Like to See (TILTS) series but inspiration finally hit me. I just upgraded to a new GPS navigation unit and was happy to see that the estimated arrival time now adjusted itself to the destination's local time, much like the listed arrival times when you travel by airplane. I was 10 minutes late for a client appointment today and I have technology to blame for it. Ok, ok, ultimately it's my fault no matter what but it makes me feel better to blame it on something other than me. While getting ready to leave for the appointment, I decided I would finally trust the built-in Google navigation on my Thunderbolt and let it route me to my destination. I love using my GPS to locate the nearest Starbucks or McDonald's while traveling. Or to make sure there is a gas station up the road when I feel I can go a few more exits before stopping for gas. Locations such as Starbucks, McDonald's and gas stations are known in the GPS world as points of interest, or POI. My GPS is loaded with hundreds of thousands of them. I cringe every time I hear about a bank giving away a free digital camera or other consumer electronics product when you open a new account. Mainly because I know that whatever they give you is either going to be a piece of junk or an outdated model purchased in bulk from some clearance outlet. That's why when I drove by a billboard today for Key Bank that mentioned a free GPS for opening a new account, I couldn't wait to get home to find out which GPS model it was so I could prove my point to my readers.… Continue reading...

The other day I had some time to kill between 1-on-1 coaching appointments and was looking for a coffee shop to give me refuge. My plan was to grab a cup of coffee, fire up my laptop and use the free wi-fi to catch up on email until it was time to leave for my next appointment. My perfect plan was foiled when I couldn't find a coffee shop, or any other place for that matter, near me that had free wi-fi.
