I fixed a nasty problem on my brother-in-law's computer today. It turned out to be a rootkit (a program that infiltrates the system and hooks system functions) and if it wasn't for this helpful web site, I would probably still be searching for a solution. Ironically, my brother-in-law's computer was already running a McAfee suite designed to protect the entire computer. And a complete scan I kicked off after the fact using Malwarebytes came up with nothing. It wasn't until I did a Google search for the symptoms on a non-infected computer that I found the previously mentioned site. One… Continue reading...

I woke up this morning and noticed this instant message waiting for me on my computer from a good friend of mine: Are you finally ready to lose some weight with no effort, well I am living proof that those acai berry pills everyone is talking about actually work, I lost 22 pounds in two weeks and it only cost me five dollars over at http://regontown.com For a split second, I thought my friend was trying to tell me something. It was bound to happen to me eventually. Over the weekend, my computer got a virus. Well, it didn't really get a virus. More like a virus wasted a bunch of my valuable time. Close, but no cigar As soon as the virus was detected, OneCare popped up a message letting me know about the virus and gave me an option to clean the virus. I thought all was good until a few minutes later,… Continue reading...

Recently, I was helping a client with her computer when I noticed a security alert pop up in the bottom right-hand corner of her screen. The alert detailed a virus that her security software had detected (thank goodness for the security software). When I clicked the link for more information, the virus was described as one that is commonly obtained from a file downloaded using a file sharing service. Right around that same time I noticed an icon on her desktop for LimeWire. Can you guess what LimeWire is? If you said a file sharing service, you are correct. How… Continue reading...

Some people have a negative connotation of the Internet due to the abundance of viruses, fraud and scams. But what if you could use the Internet to avoid a scam? I recently used my TiVo HD DVR to subscribe to a video podcast called Scam School. Scam School is the brainchild of Brian Bushwood and aims to expose scams to the public to prevent people from falling for them. I was a little skeptical when I watched my first episode. My guard is usually up pretty high when it comes to scams but I have to tell you, I fell… Continue reading...
