Q: Are there DVR-like recorders that one can buy to record TV from an antenna or cable without subscribing to a paid service? The best I can tell, TiVo requires a subscriptions to record TV signals from an antenna. A: Just about any computer now can be constructed with a TV tuner card built-in. And if you already have a computer, these same tuner cards are available in almost any store. As far as what they can record, they should be able to easily record over-the-air antenna signals providing you have good reception in your area. As for cable, it… Continue reading...

You're probably growing tired of me telling you how wonderful TiVo is but I have actually come up with an improvement to TiVo that would make it even better. Today's Technology I'd Like to See (TILTS) is portable TiVo. Yes, I know you can already transfer your TiVo shows to portable video devices such as your laptop or an iPod Touch but I'm talking about simpler portability. What if there was a drive bay on your TiVo that housed a portable hard drive with all of your recorded and downloaded shows? Whenever you leave the house you could just pull… Continue reading...

I've had my Flip Video Ultra camcorder for a while now. It's been one of the handiest and most portable video recorders I've ever used. And it couldn't get much easier to use. Press big red button to start recording. Press big red button to stop recording. But alas, it's time for me to retire my Flip Video. There's a new sherriff in town and his name is the Flip Video Ultra HD. And mine should arrive next Tuesday. I decided to upgrade mainly because of the Ultra HD's high definition capability. I do a lot of video shooting that… Continue reading...

I've been predicting for some time now that the distribution of television shows over the airwaves will be a thing of the past sooner than later. It will be replaced by Internet (or whatever the Internet will be called at this time) distribution. It just makes sense. There's only so much programming that can travel over the airwaves in any given city and it is bound by city limits. On the other hand, the Internet can deliver virtually unlimited programming to unlimited locations. And with the Internet, you don't need to have million dollar pockets to create your own show… Continue reading...

Everyone already knows I love my TiVo. Bring up the topic in conversation with me and it's hard to get me to shut up. But here's a little benefit to TiVo I've never really talked about before--it's a cliffhanger killer. Television show producers are famous for cliffhangers. They are what keep you coming back next week, right? Well, with TiVo cliffhangers are irrelevant to me since it's not at all uncommon for me to let my favorite shows queue up for 5, 10 or even 15 weeks. When the mood hits me, I start with the oldest episode and watch… Continue reading...
