QUESTION: I'm all a twitter over the discussion on ditching my ISP. So - for the free standing Wi-Fi device, is there a fee involved? Also, I heard a conversation the other day about dropping your cable and going with the digital box, roof antenna for your local channels then using the Internet for anything else. Will you expand on this solution and cover all the hardware needed and if a noobie like myself could complete this process. Do you know how much more we could add to our retirement fund if we could drop Internet and cable? Lastly, how… Continue reading...

Earlier this week, my DIRECTV DVR completely locked up. It wouldn't respond to anything. This always frightens me as I have yet to find an easy and reliable way to backup the files (shows) on my DVR like I would with my computer. I'm still fairly new to the DIRECTV DVRs so I figured like TiVo there was no way to reboot the DVR unless I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Unfortunately for me, this means pulling out equipment and blindly reaching for the power cord behind the DVR. Luckily it worked and the DVR started rebooting. When… Continue reading...

Last Friday night was one of the best family baseball game expierences ever for me. It started a couple of weeks ago when my wife received a phone call from Indianapolis Indians guest relations informing her that my 7-year-old son had won Culver's Junior Announcer contest, meaning he would get to announce the first Indianapolis Indians batter in the game. A small part of me was worried he would forget to substitute the real batter's name for Michael Jackson come game… Continue reading...

I witnessed something amazing today. On a recent visit with my parents, my mom realized one minute before the Olympics kicked off in prime-time that one of her regularly recorded shows was going to prevent the Olympics from recording on TiVo (it's a single tuner TiVo) that night. Without missing a beat, my mom grabbed the TiVo remote control, brought up the menu, browsed by channel, found the Olympics, hit record, acknowledged that it would be ok to cancel her reguarly recorded show, hit the menu again, browsed to another channel, found a later, repeat showing of her reguarly recorded… Continue reading...

Earlier this week I wrote about my love/hate relationship with DIRECTV. Actually, mostly my hate relationship. But I promised myself I would return to the topic to discuss the love relationship. So in this blog post, I will concentrate only on what I like about my new DIRECTV setup. Before I begin, however, I have to stay that my opinion of TiVo being the hands-down best DVR on the market has not changed. But that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement. Specifically, here is a short list of features that I now have with DIRECTV that I didn't have… Continue reading...
