I find it fascinating how much technology manufacturers assume their users will know about their products. Take a digital camera for instance. Most of them come with a user manual of some kind. But how many of them address real-world questions like these that noobies have asked me over the past few years? Why can't I tell what size this memory card is? [Answer: Because you are looking at your battery.] Why are all of my pictures grainy? [Answer: Because you are using digital zoom.] How do I know when I am digital zooming? [Answer: Your camera may have a… Continue reading...

I've noticed something really strange lately. My kids don't seem to be taking many digital pictures with their digital cameras any more. It's not that they don't like the cameras. They take them everywhere they go. But instead of taking digital pictures they are taking digital video. Kids don't have technology baggage I'm not sure why I didn't see this coming. It reminds me of the first time my son printed something from the Internet and it came out black and white. He couldn't understand what happened to the color. When I tried to explain to him that dad's color… Continue reading...

This wasn't my family's first trip to Disney World. We went a few years ago before our kids started school. I remember on the last visit seeing a bunch of professional photographers scattered throughout the parks. For the first day, we avoided them completely because we thought they were going to try to sell us a bunch of expensive photos. Only later did we realize that these professional photographers only enhance your entire Disney experience. This is because of something Disney calls the PhotoPass. What is a PhotoPass? If you don't know what a PhotoPass is or how they work,… Continue reading...

I've taught many a person over the past 3 years how to use their digital camera. And I've had a ton of fun doing it, mainly because today's digital cameras are so darn easy to use. But I have a feeling that's about to change. You see, what some of you might not know is that there exists an entire series of higher-end digital cameras that are out of most noobies' league. I'm referring to digital SLR, or DSLR, cameras. You know, the kind of camera where you actually have to worry about lighting, focusing and shutter speed (among other… Continue reading...

Being a techie isn't always all roses. Like today when my techie skills were put to the test... by my plumber. I could write an entire post on the reason I had a plumber at my house but since it isn't even in the slightest bit related to technology let's just leave it at the fact that I hired a plumber to look at some questionable plumbing in my house. It didn't take long for the plumber to determine that my plumbing was bad. Really bad. So bad in fact that he asked me if I had a digital camera… Continue reading...
