Recently, Noobie conducted a poll on its website asking How do you back up your computer? Most of the results were typical but one particular statistic did stand out to me. If I had it my way, the $10 surge protectors you get at Wal-Mart would have their name changed to "power strips". I don't think they stand a chance at protecting any kind of real surge. They do, however, do a great job of turning one electrical outlet into 6 or 8 outlets. Don't read this the wrong way. Not all surge protectors are junk. A few weeks ago I explained here on my blog how I recovered 100% of my data after my hard drive crashed. Part of that process involved replacing the dead hard drive with a brand new hard drive.
