Predicting whether or not new technology services will succeed has proven to be a bit of a crapshoot. But I'm going to go out on a limb with this one and say it will never take off. I'm referring to a recent story I read on TechCrunch describing how movie studios have struck a deal to create a premium video-on-demand service on DIRECTV. The service will bring movie titles to your home just 60 days after their release in the movie theaters. But here's, the catch. The cost to watch the movie will be $30. Now believe me, I've done… Continue reading...

I'm a pretty consistent Redbox user. It's so easy to just dial up a movie on my iPhone using the Redbox app, reserve the movie and then pick it up at my convenience. And when I'm done watching the movie, I just drop it off at whatever Redbox is closest to me. I've even been known to rent Redbox movies for my kids on long car trips. Rent the movie in one state, drop it off in another. What's not to like? Well, two things to be precise. And those two things are coupons and coupons. The first reason I… Continue reading...

One of the reasons I have been slow to adopt Blu-ray is that I can only play the discs in Blu-ray players. So if I buy a Blu-ray movie for my kids, they can only watch it in the room with the Blu-ray player, not in any other room or on the built-in DVD player in our minivan. But the increasing popularity of DVD bundles might help. I'm referring to movie bundles that now come with the Blu-ray version, the standard DVD version and a digital copy of the movie. Despicable Me Last month I got a great deal from… Continue reading...

Somebody please tell me I am grossly missing something with this new Blockbuster Direct Access announcement. Because I think it is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Let me get this straight. I walk into a Blockbuster store to get a movie. They tell me all of the copies of the movie are rented out (or they don't carry the movie) but they can mail a copy to me which will arrive in 3 days. In today's gotta-have-it-now world, Blockbuster just took a gigantic step backwards. Continue reading...

I have been really slow to adopt Blu-ray. In fact, I haven't really adopted it at all. Part of the reason is that my television doesn't support 1080p and my audio/video receiver doesn't support HDMI switching. And without upgrading these additional components, I wouldn't truly be enjoying the Blu-ray experience. Plus, try telling your wife you need to spend another $2000 replacing your television and audio/video receiver so you can "truly enjoy" the new $200 Blu-ray player you just purchased. Continue reading...
