Technology writers just don’t “get” noobies

Every so often I see a technology article in a consumer publication that catches my eye. Why? Because the article claims to give readers the same type of information that Noobie provides (which always makes me a little nervous). I think to myself, “Is someone out there already providing better information than Noobie and to a larger audience?”

Then I read the article and all of my fears diminish.

Here’s a perfect example. This is an excerpt from an article in the January 2008 issue of Computer Shopper titled “The Ultimate Guide to Buying the System of Your Dreams in the New Year”:

If you can find a spare grand in your sofa cushions, go for Intel’s top-tier Core 2 Extreme QX9650. This processor is based on the latest 45-nanometer (nm) technology (code-named “Penryn” during its development), and it works with the new Bearlake chipset to increase front-side-bus speeds to 1,333MHz and support newer DDR3 RAM (more on that in a moment). The top end of AMD’s Phenom platform is currently occupied by the 2.2GHz quad-core Phenom 9 CPU, with faster quad-core chips and even three-core models due in the first half of 2008.

Now don’t you feel totally prepared to go pick out your own personal computer?
