Quick, write down everything you own on a piece of paper
A good friend of mine, Cindy Hartman, recently included one of my blog posts on her Hartman Inventory blog. The blog post talked about the importance of backing up the data on your laptop and how close it came to affecting me personally after three cars parked right next to mine in a parking lot were broken into. One of those cars belonged to another friend of mine who had his laptop stolen from the front seat of his car.
Hearing me preach about computer backups is nothing new. But have you ever stopped to think what would happen if everything in your home office was stolen? Sure, I could get the data back because I use Carbonite to back up my data. But what about the physical computer equipment itself? And the monitor, the scanner, the printer, the software and everything else tied to your computer. Would you be able to accurately detail to your insurance company everything that was stolen?
My guess is your answer is somewhere between an "I don't know" and an "I hope so." Which is why I think Cindy has such a fantastic business in Hartman Inventory. Hartman Inventory specializes in providing detailed documentation of everything you own. They even go as far as to provide an itemized list and photographs of each room in your house or office and its contents.
Try this simple exercise
If you don't think you have a need for something like this, stop right now and close your eyes. Spend a minute or two visualizing your home office or whatever room you keep your computer in and all of its contents. Now open your eyes, get a paper and pen, and write down everything you visualized on a piece of paper.
Now compare what you wrote down on paper to the actual physical contents of your home office. What did you miss? What is the total value of the items you missed? Remember, this was just your home office. How well would you do with this exercise in every other room in your home?
