No resolution to higher video resolution problem

Q: A new software program I am installing requires me to be at 800 x 600 resolution. When I try to go to that resolution, it pauses for a few seconds and then goes right back to my standard 640 x 480 resolution. Why can’t I go to 800 x 600 resolution?

A: When you change your video resolution as you describe, you should see a window appear confirming the new resolution and giving you 15 seconds to accept the new resolution. If you are not seeing that window, it may be possible that you are unable to go to a 800 x 600 resolution on your computer.

Since 800 x 600 is fairly common these days, I’m going to assume you have a computer that’s been around for a while. If this is the case, you may need to upgrade your video card or purchase a new monitor. One or the other may not be capable of displaying an 800 x 600 resolution.

Keep in mind as I always preach to noobies, sometimes upgrading your equipment can be more costly than purchasing new equipment. But if the issue is indeed your monitor, it’s time to get a new one anyway.
