My six year old can use a TiVo and so can you

I’ve been caught on more than one occasion preaching about how easy TiVo is to use. TiVo is one company that just gets user interface design. But in case you aren’t convinced, consider what my six year old son did tonight without a stitch of guidance from anyone:

  • Powered on the television and A/V receiver.
  • Pressed the button on the remote for the TiVo main menu.
  • Pressed the down arrow on the remote three times to highlight “Pick Programs to Record”.
  • Pressed the select button on the remote.
  • Realized “Search by Title” (the option he wanted) was already selected.
  • Pressed the select button on the remote.
  • Realized “All Programs” (the option he wanted) was already selected.
  • Pressed the select button on the remote.
  • Use the navigation keys on the remote to enter the letters “FAI”.
  • Realized that “FAI” was enough letters to display the show he was looking for.
  • Highlighted “Fairly OddParents, The” from the list of search results.
  • Pressed the select button on the remote.
  • Read the description of the show to make sure the episode he wanted to record was selected.
  • Realized “Record this episode” (the option he wanted) was already selected.
  • Pressed the select button on the remote.
  • Press the back arrow on the remote until he returned to the main TiVo menu.
  • Press the up arrow on the remote three times to highlight “Now Playing List”.
  • Pressed the select button on the remote.
  • Found a show he wanted to watch that was previously recorded.
  • Pressed the select button on the remote.
  • Realized “Play” (the option he wanted) was already selected.
  • Pressed the select button on the remote.
  • Watched his show.

So let me repeat. If my six year old can record an episode of Fairly OddParents with no assistance from anyone else and then cap it off by watching a previously recorded show… ANYONE CAN DO IT! Seriously.
