How do moms compare to Mr. Noobie?
BabyCenter, the self-proclaimed "leading destination on the Internet for new and expectant parents" is running a poll on their web site asking moms, "Which tech gadget, electronic device, or technology can you not live without?" Choices include cell phone, PDA, microwave, email, Internet, GPS, TiVo, television, DVD player, digital music player, video game console, digital camera, other and none of the above.
I voted in the poll but found it difficult as you can only pick one technology from the entire list. I ended up going with the Internet because using the Internet is so much a part of what I do every day. And yes, I know I'm not a mom but I am a dad and I'm guessing I'm not the first dad to have voted in this poll.
As of the writing of this blog post, 2,803 people have voted and generated the following top three vote-getters:
- Cell phone: 26%
- Internet: 21%
- Microwave: 11%
Television and digital camera were tied at 10% for fourth place.
So it seems that moms agree with Mr. Noobie for the most part. That is until you look at the rest of the votes.
Two of my favorite technologies
I have said many times that two technologies that have revolutionized my life over the past 10 years have been my TiVo and my GPS navigation system. Both of these were available selections on the poll, but only garnered 5% of the votes for one (TiVO) and 1% of votes for the other (GPS navigation system). This puts these at the bottom of the list along with digital music player (1%) and video game console (0%).
I believe the reason for this is that TiVo has struggled trying to make it mainstream into people's homes due to the easy alternative of just accepting the digital video recorder offered by your local cable or satellite company. I wonder if the votes would have been higher if the choice had been "digital video recorder (DVR)" instead of "TiVo".
As for the GPS navigation system, I completely understand the difference between myself and moms. If I didn't own a business that required me to frequently visit new client's homes in neighborhoods that I have never visited before, I may not be as high on the GPS navigation system either. I'm sure like many other moms, I don't need a GPS to get to the soccer field for the 110th time.
So what would your vote be? Leave a comment and let Mr. Noobie know.

Hmmm. I think Moms and Dads are taking the microwave oven for granted! Seriously. I don’t know what I’d do without it. Of course, there is a new stovetop out that says it boils water in 90 seconds.that could be a new contender.
I also thought “cell phone” could be a misleading vote since smart phones encompass all the power of a PDA with the convenience of a cell phone. (Not to mention, access to the Internet.) I love letting my little boy enjoy a special lunch out or some play time while I use my phone to check email and read RSS feeds! My phone has become even more valuable as I better learn how to use ChaCha and Jott.
