Goodbye punch cards, I won’t miss you

I've always hated punch cards. You know, the kind you get at a restaurant, bakery or oil change place that reward you for every X number of purchases?

It's not that I don't like getting something for free as a reward for doing business with someone. It's that I can never remember to take the punch card with me when I visit the establishment. That, and I really don't like carrying them in my wallet (for more on this watch this video).

Which means I have about 3 or 4 punch cards for each place because they always assure me I can combine them when I have enough purchases.

Surely someone could use technology to get around all of this, right?

Welcome to Moe's!

Moe's Southwest Grill has done just this. I went to eat there tonight and at the checkout register, there was a modified cell phone secured to the countertop with an option to enter your cell phone number. I couldn't resist.

After I entered my number, I immediately received the following text message:

Reply YES now to receive coupons and promotions from Moes-US 31. Up to 2 msg./wk. Reply STOP to quit. Questions?

A quick reply of YES from me generated the next message:

You are now signed up to receive coupons and promotions from Moes-US 31. Reply STOP to quit. Questions?

Immediately followed by:

Moes-US 31: Buy 1 Entree, get 1 Entree FREE w/ 2 Large Drink purchase, Use Code: xxx-xxx-xxx [code ommitted]. Reply STOP to quit

Bonus for electronic delivery

And besides getting the instant coupon delivered electronically to my iPhone, the woman behind the counter explained to me that my visit was also logged in their system and that further rewards would come with subsequent visits.

Thank you Moe's! And goodbye punch cards.

  • It’s about time. I’m with you, I hate all the cards. I’m a woman and carry a purse but still have a hard time keeping up with all the cards. I always said, if you can give me the deal with a card, you can give me the deal anyway. LOL I know, it’s marketing. LOL
    Technology! Got a love it.
