Firefox corrects your Internet spelling mistakes

I have been test driving Firefox as my Internet browser for about one month now. I really like it. For those of you unfamiliar with Firefox, it is in the same software category as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. In other words, it is a software program that you use to surf the Internet.

I knew a lot about Firefox before I installed it but one of its features really caught me off guard. It caught me off guard because I didn’t know it existed and now I’m not sure I could live without it. I’m referring to the built-in spell checking feature of Firefox.

Check my spelling as I type

Referred to by “check my spelling as I type” in Firefox’s options dialog, the spell checker works exactly like the spell checker in Microsoft Word. In other words, as you type it checks your spelling and puts a red underline underneath any word that is not in its dictionary. And just like any other spell checker, you can right click a misspelled word to see a list of suggested spellings, ignore the misspelling or add it to Firefox’s dictionary so the word does not get flagged as misspelled again.

Who needs Internet spell checking?

Some people reading this may be wondering why anyone would need a spell checker in a web browser where you mainly just read text and navigate by clicking the mouse. Well, here’s a few examples of how it comes in handy for me:

  • Composing a new email using Google’s GMail
  • Posting a new blog entry, like the one you are reading
  • Leaving a comment on someone else’s blog
  • Filling out a customer support request form on a company’s web site
