Ever wonder how a cellular carrier prepares for the Super Bowl?

Last week I had the privilege of getting a behind-the-scenes tour of the infrastructure Verizon Wireless has put in place to handle the upcoming voice and data traffic for the Super Bowl here in Indianapolis.

I shot some video during the tour and have edited it down the best I could to about four and a half minutes. But I'll warn you, this video is not for noobies. Quite the opposite, it's quite techie in nature.

But there are some fun facts anyone can pull from the video. Like the fact that all of the infrastructure put in place for the Super Bowl will remain permanently, which will be great for future events like the Big Ten Championship and the Final Four.

And pay attention to the number of inside antennas and Wi-Fi capacity. Both of those numbers blew me away.

Your cameraman should have had a tripod, a wider lens, and at least some ability to direct the action. There was entirely too much movement from both the camera and subject. More focus on the equipment rather than the speaker would have been preferable. A pre-walk thru of what was going to be pointed out ahead of time would have helped at each location. it only takes a minute or so.

  • Leonard, I was the cameraman!
