Donate $10 to Haiti relief by texting “Haiti” to 90999

When I heard it was possible to donate $10 to the Haiti earthquake relief efforts by simply sending a text message from my mobile phone, I thought it was pretty cool (good cause aside). When I read that the Red Cross has received more than $3 million through this effort as of 9 a.m. EST, I was blown away.

Yet another great use of texting I hadn't thought of.

Easy as pie

If you want to see how easy it is and provide your own helping hand, here's all you need to do:

From your mobile phone, text the word "Haiti" to 90999.

You will receive a reply back (mine took a while) that says:

To confirm your $10 donation to Red Cross Int'l Response Fund reply with YES. Reply HELP for help or visit RedCross.org

A simple reply of YES as indicated in the instructions will produce this confirmation:

Thanks! $10 charged to your phone bill for Red Cross Int'l Relief. Reply HELP for help or Visit RedCRoss.org Reply STOP to cancel. Msg&Data Rates May Apply

That's all there is to it. Kudos to the Red Cross, Mobile Accord and the MGive Foundation for making it drop-dead easy to help a good cause!

P.S. Check out Your Mobile Giving by State if you want to see a state-by-state breakdown of money raised for the above-mentioned effort.
