DIRECTV misses me

Yesterday I received a letter in the mail from DIRECTV. Here is the first portion of the letter:

Dear Patric Welch, We’ve missed you! So we’ve created a special offer just for you. Get 4 months FREE of PREMIER, our best TV package, when you order NFL SUNDAY TICKET. With over 250 channels and exclusive NFL action, it’s our best offer of the year. Local channels are included. No equipment to buy. Not start-up costs. Call now!

What’s so odd about this you might ask? Well, for starters, I AM ALREADY A DIRECTV CUSTOMER! In fact, I have been one for over ten years. And for those of you keeping score at home, yes, I did run over to my television after reading this letter to make sure I still had service.

To add insult to injury, there is a pretty blue box at the top right of the letter that details some great free stuff that I will get if I become a DIRECTV subscriber. This includes:

  • FREE Professional Installation - No equipment to buy!
  • FREE DIRECTV HD Receiver or DVR upgrade
  • FREE HBO, Starz, SHOWTIME and Cinemax for 4 months
  • FREE Portable DVD player

Now let’s compare that list to what I, a ten-year customer of DIRECTV, have:

  • I paid for my installation and have since paid to have my satellite dish “upgraded”
  • I do not own a HD receiver but sure would like one
  • I do not have HBO, Starz, SHOWTIME or Cinemax, nor have I ever been offered it for free, not including the “free preview” weekends
  • I have never been offered a portable DVD player

DIRECTV, if you are reading this, what kind of message do you think you just sent to one of your ten-year loyal customers?
