Cheaper or faster? Take your Internet pick

Q: Which is better for the Internet, DSL or cable?

A: The answer to this question really depends on what your definition of “better” means.

If your definition of “better” means “faster” you will most likely be happier getting your Internet service from your local cable company. Cable companies still seem to have an edge on speed when it comes to Internet service. For example, my local cable company gives me download speeds of 10 mbps (megabits per second). On the flip side, a DSL provider in my area tops out around 6 mbps for their premium package.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand what megabits per second means. Just know that the bigger the number, the faster the download speed.

Now if your definition of “better” means “cheaper”, DSL might be right for you. Because most DSL providers know they are not the fastest, they tend to offer much more attractive prices for their Internet service. Sticking with that same DSL provider I mentioned earlier, they have packages ranging from $14.99/month up to $34.99/month. Keep in mind that the $14.99/month package will have significantly slower download speeds than the $34.99/month package but if you don’t spend a lot of time on the Internet and just need basic service, the $14.99/month DSL package may be just what you need.

Notice I didn’t mention anything about the bundled rates that many companies offer if you purchase two or more services from them. As I mentioned on a previous show, these bundles can save you a lot of money but the rates are generally good for a limited time only and eventually revert back to full price.
