Be cautious when digging through bargain DVD bins
Everyone has probably seen those giant bins of bargain DVDs at superstores like Wal-Mart. I saw one today that had the DVDs priced at 2 for $9.99. Usually these bins are full of DVDs that are of little or no interest to me but I am still drawn to them nonetheless. I guess my curiosity always gets the best of me.
The 2 for $9.99 bin I saw today was no exception. I couldn't resist digging through the bin to see if there might be a hidden gem somewhere in the pile. Suprisingly, I didn't have to dig very far before I found a handful of titles I would like to own.
My internal radar instantly began searching for a reason why there would be DVDs I want in a 2 for $9.99 bin. I looked a little closer and quickly found the reason. The DVDs were full screen versions of the movies. I stopped buying full screen versions of movies years ago and buy widescreen versions of movies exclusively now.
Full screen does not mean it's not a good deal
For the record, I'm not alleging that these DVDs were a rip-off because they were full screen versions of the movies. Plenty of people still buy full screen versions, when they can find them. It's just that I've already upgraded all of my televisions to widescreen and I have no use for a full screen version of a movie.
What I do want to emphasize is that noobies should be careful (maybe even skeptical) when looking through these DVD bargain bins. If the difference between full screen and widescreen is important to you, be sure to read the DVD case to make sure you are getting the version you want.
