Are noobies ready for pie fights and pillow fights?

  • Posted: November 24, 2008  Topics: Internet

I signed up for a Facebook account many moons ago but initially I never did anything with it. But a few months ago, I decided to dive in and learn all that is Facebook. I stumbled a bit here and there but for the most part I finally understood the usefulness of Facebook.

The usefulness I'm referring to is staying in touch with old friends you may have drifted apart from. Or for viewing a friend's pictures online from that party you both went to last weekend (remember when we used to ask someone to "make doubles" of their pictures?)

Facebook also has practical business applications as you can now set up your own pages for your business, import your blog posts and even initiate an advertising campaign.

I get all that.

What I don't get about Facebook is this:

Facebook Requests

Every time I log into my Facebook account I have yet another "request" to respond to. At first it was (lil) green patch requests. Then that expanded into sea garden requests. Then before I knew it I had pending requests for drinking wars, nicest person, kidnappings, pie fights, pillow fights, birthdays, blue coves, causes, videogifts and true pe requests.

What exactly are all of these? I have absolutely no idea.

I do know, however, that I wouldn't point a noobie towards Facebook right now. Not unless they already know a close friend or family member that wants to connect with them. And even then I would find it very difficult to teach a noobie how to stick to the basics on Facebook when every other day someone wants to have a pie fight or pillow fight with them.

  • I hear ya!
I’m not a Noobie, but don’t like a lot of the facebook apps… I honestly don’t have the time and ignore them… Occasionally I go through and clean them up… Its crazy to see.  I’ve I could post a pic, you would see I have 12 (lil) green patch request and 147 other requests!!!!  Some of these things are great… but some of them who wants!

  • I’m with you. I often say I use FB to advertise my latest blog post and to play word games. That’s it. I pretty much ignore all the rest of the madness.

  • @asudduth @Amy Glad to see I’m not alone on this. Thanks!

  • I feel like there needs to be some etiquette rules for Facebook. When you’re new to it, you just don’t realize that it isn’t just ONE gift app (like lil green patch) but hundreds! You can’t keep up with all of that. I also don’t really understand writing on someone’s wall. People will see what you wrote, but if the person responds, the response appears on your wall...seems odd to me.

What I do like is that it is almost a cheater’s way of having a blog. I hope I don’t offend you dedicated bloggers...but it is super easy to share thoughts, start conversations, post pictures, etc.

  • @Stephanie You hit the nail on the head with the tons of applications. Every time someone sends me something I have to agree to install a new application. How do I know if these applications are safe?

  • Well said! Ha ha. Some of these apps. looks like they’re geared for someone who is trying to work out their aggression online...I mean, man! If I feel like whacking someone with a pillow...I’ll march right over to their house!

  • @Nicole I’d love to see what you do with the pie!
