Last night’s American Idol results show once again proved to me how technology is constantly changing. During the new segment where viewers are allowed to ask questions of the judges and contestants, a 20 year old woman asked Ramiele, one of the remaining contestants who just also happens to be 20 years old, “What was the last song you downloaded to your iPod?” Ramiele quickly answered with the name of a song by R. Kelly. What amazed me was that Ramiele never said that she didn’t have an iPod or that she doesn’t download songs. Instead her answer was so… Continue reading...

I don’t really have anything against Microsoft but lately the company is starting to get on my nerves. Specifically when it comes to rebooting my computer automatically in the middle of the night. These reboots stem from the automated updates that download to my PC in the middle of the night. The updates are usually related to patches issued by Microsoft to address recent security threats. I’m all for that. But I’m not all for the reboots. I’m not for them because I habitually have 10-15 programs open on my desktop at any given time (I have 4 gigabytes of… Continue reading...

This is becoming all too common of a habit for me. Install new software or accept software update. Realize the software added an icon to my Quick Launch toolbar without asking me. Delete the Quick Launch toolbar icon. If you are not familiar with the Quick Launch toolbar, it usually resides just to the right of the Start button on Windows XP or to the right of the Windows logo button on Windows Vista. More often than not you will see tiny icons for programs such as Internet Explorer, or the “little blue e” as my kids call it, that… Continue reading...

My Philips DVD player can do amazing things. In fact, its rich feature set is what led to me purchasing it over a year ago. So what are these amazing things? Well, for starters, it can play CD-R/W, DivX, DVD, DVD+R/W, DVD-R/W DVD-Video, MP3, MPEG4, Picture CDs, VCD, and SVCD. Are you still with me? I didn’t think so but don’t worry, my point today isn’t what I can do with this DVD player, it’s what I can’t do, namely open or close the DVD tray using the remote control. No big deal, right? Wrong. This small oversight drives my… Continue reading...

Don’t let anyone tell you that people don’t read blogs. Yesterday I wrote an entry on my blog describing my loss of faith in Carbonite, my online backup service due to some ongoing server maintenance issue. Less than 24 hours later, Carbonite is back up and running and my backup status is already back to 100%, where it should be. Why the sudden change? For starters this blog is starting to get very nice visibility from Google searches. And it didn’t hurt matters any that I hyperlinked the company name Carbonite in my previous blog meaning any Carbonite employee could… Continue reading...
