I finally got around to trying the instant watch feature included with my Netflix membership. After browsing the collection of movies available for instant download, I decided to go a little retro with the 1978 version of Superman: The Movie. Starting the movie couldn’t have been simpler. I just clicked the Play button and Netflix notified me that I needed to download the player software one time only. After a painless install of the software, my movie began playing within seconds. Recently, I wrote a post saying how sorry I felt for consumers who might be snapping up so-called good deals on HD DVD players. Since that time the high definition DVD format war has come to an end. Blu-Ray has won. For at least 24 hours I felt better knowing that the news of Blu-Ray’s victory would disseminate quickly. Technology is a funny thing. One day a new technology is living on the bleeding edge and another it’s old hat. I think of this whenever I drive by an old-fashioned motel. Many moons ago, motels would boast on a big sign outside of the motel that they offer free color television. Now you would laugh if the person behind the counter told you color television was included in your night’s stay. A little later the signs changed to “Free Cable” and eventually “Free HBO”. I received an email from Netflix today. The email contained a survey with one simple question. When did I put the movie that they just received in the mail? But I didn’t have to login or enter a code to start the survey. Instead, Netflix included five or six links right in the email, one for each of the possible days I could have put my return DVD in the mail. Now generally I don’t do well with surveys sent via email. I always think I’d like to help out by completing the survey but then that thought fades quickly…
