Funny how fast things change. When I bought my laptop a couple of years ago I thought 80 gigabytes (GB) of hard drive storage was plenty. I guess it was at the time. But now I routinely receive low disk space warnings mainly due to my ever-growing iTunes music collection that I store on the laptop. Make that used to store on my laptop. My second new toy I recently purchased (remember the first was a TiVo HD DVR) is an HP Media Server running Windows Home Server. While I am still putting the new media server through all of… Continue reading...

Let’s talk TiVo. Specifically, the TiVo high definition digital video recorder (HD DVR) which is now proudly integrated into my home entertainment system. Not too long ago, I told everyone right here in my What’s Noo? blog that I was going to switch from DIRECTV to digital cable and purchase a new “native” TiVo DVR. I didn’t exactly deliver 100% on that statement but I think what I did was even better. For starters, I didn’t go with digital cable mainly because my local cable company is in the middle of a transition to its new owner, Comcast. If I… Continue reading...

Last week I got to know the UPS guy really well. That’s because he made several visits to my house to deliver my new techie toys. Specifically, a TiVo HD DVR and an HP Media Server. Some of you may remember me recently writing about my love of TiVo so you already know I was itching to get one. But the HP Media Server grew out of my increasing need for network storage. I have a lot to say about both of these new products but rather than go on and on about them in one long blog post, I’ve… Continue reading...

I recently wrote about my dislike of electronic or eBills. This morning I reaffirmed that feeling when I received my AT&T eBill and noticed that the charges on the bill were three times the normal amount. So once again, I had to click the link in the email, look up my user name and password and login to the company’s web site. Even more of a treat, I had to enter my location and fill out a security profile before I was let into the site. After finding my bill summary and eventually the billing detail, I noticed that I… Continue reading...

I guess I should be used to surprising new technology developments by now but I’m not. My father has driven a Lexus car for several years and I have seen things on his car that I never would have thought anyone needed. Like cooled seats (why should the heated seats have all of the fun?), auto rain-sensing windshield wipers and laser cruise control. Yet here I am again thinking that digital cameras have pretty much maxed out on features, save the constant increase in megapixels each year. Wrong again. Sony is introducing a new feature on select digital cameras called… Continue reading...
