Q: My DVD drive on my laptop says it is dual-layer. What does that mean and will I need to get special discs for it? A: In the most basic sense, dual-layer refers to the capacity of the DVD. In other words, how much stuff can you fit on the DVD. A standard, single-layer DVD holds up to 4.7 gigabytes of data. That’s roughly the equivalent of 6 CDs. A dual-layer DVD, on the other hand, can hold up to 8.5 gigabytes of data or roughly 10 or 11 CDs. The increased capacity is due to the fact that dual-layer… Continue reading...

Last week I was running an errand at Target and I noticed a video display featuring a ClearPlay DVD player. Up until this point, for whatever reason, ClearPlay has escaped my technology radar. But never fear noobies, I picked one up on the spot and took it home with me. What is ClearPlay? In a nutshell, ClearPlay allows you to watch the DVDs you already own minus the bad parts you don’t want your kids to see. Strike One Earlier this week, Apple announced its new line of iPods along with a $200 price cut on the iPhone. Both of these announcements left a bad taste in my mouth. While I understand that being a pioneer of new technology products comes with a price, I didn’t think that price would be $200. Strike Two Furthermore, the new iPod Touch model looks identical to the iPhone. In fact it pretty much is the iPhone… Continue reading...

Q: I just got an email telling me I won a $250 Starbucks gift card. I think I already know the answer but is this email a scam? Even with Starbucks prices I could buy a lot of coffee with $250! A: I can go you one better. In the past few months, I have not only won a $250 Starbucks gift card but I have also won a free trip to Europe, an iPod Nano, a candlelit dinner for two and a trip to Disneyworld. Fortunately, I didn’t need to bother accepting any of these prizes because a prince… Continue reading...

Q: I want to sell my father’s old train collection. I know about eBay but I’m really an eBay noobie. Can you give me some advice on how to best sell the trains on eBay? A: Whenever I want to sell something on eBay one of the first things I do is look at past and current eBay listings for a similar item to the one I’m selling to get a feel for what the eBay market is paying. To do this, just go to eBay and use the search box at the top of the page to enter a… Continue reading...
