Q: What are text messages and why would I use them? A: Text messages are really exactly what they sound like. They are short messages sent between two text message-enabled devices. The messages do not contain any graphics which is why they are simply called text messages. By far the most popular text messaging device is a cell phone. And by far the most popular users of text messages are teenagers. Text messaging has a slight advantage over email in that you don’t need to be at your computer to send or receive a message. Yes, some people have more… Continue reading...

Q: I was hoping that you could please tell me the best virus protector to buy for my computer. Are the ones you get from the discount stores ok? A: Although there are dozens of anti-virus products on the market, the ones you will hear the most about are McAfee, Symantec and Windows Live OneCare. This doesn’t necessarily mean these are the best but often you will see one of these products bundled with a new computer which is why they are the most popular. Because LightScribe… Continue reading...

A: As much as I’d love to tell you that the cookies you are referring to are those yummy oatmeal raisin ones you find at the grocery store, sadly they are not. The cookies, in your case, are very small data files that reside on your computer. These data files contain information that helps a web site remember such things as your login name, site preferences or in some instances, the items in your shopping cart. If you have used a… Continue reading...

Q: You keep mentioning that Tech Talk with Noobie is available as a podcast but I don’t know what a podcast is. How do I use the podcast? A: A podcast is really nothing more than a fancy name for a digital audio file, usually in mp3 format. So when I say that Tech Talk with Noobie is available as a podcast it means that you can listen to the show using any mp3 player or iPod. To listen to the current or any previous show, you just download the appropriate mp3 file to your computer and then transfer it… Continue reading...
