Most computers these days come with a minimum of three or four USB ports. On top of that, USB ports can be expanded through USB hubs to chain upwards of 128 different devices. The average computer user probably only needs one or two USB ports, thus leaving an additional one or two lonely USB ports on their computer. What can those open USB ports be used for? Microsoft and Yahoo recently announced their renewed effort to allow their instant messaging clients to work with one another. This was supposed to be completed in June but was delayed because of concerns by Microsoft on how it would affect their millions of existing customers. What does this mean for noobies? It’s one less instant messaging client to learn if you have friends or family that are split between using Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo’s Messenger applications. Last week I purchased a new laptop at a major brick and mortar electronics reseller. As I was completing my purchase, the salesperson asked me if I wanted the free printer included as a bonus that week with every laptop purchase. I thought to myself, “I don’t need a new printer.” But free is awful hard to pass up. Was there a catch? Yes. The dreaded rebate. The printer really costs $90.00 with $90.00 in rebates. I had lunch today with a friend and neighbor of mine. The topic of PDFs (portable document format) came up and she was telling me that she has not been able to figure out how to create PDFs from her Word documents. She mentioned that she thought she needed to purchase Adobe Acrobat but was hesistant to do so because it cost so much money.
