Apple announces revolutionary device with a horrible name

  • Posted: January 28, 2010  Topics: Gadgets

I am not going to write today about the hype concerning Apple's big product announcement yesterday. Nor am I going to talk about how shiny and pretty it looks, how thin and light it is or even what it is capable of doing.

What I am going to write about instead is the name Apple chose for this beautiful new device... the iPad.

The what?!?!?

For a second, when I first heard the name while watching the live stream of the event on the Internet, I thought it was a joke. I quickly realized it wasn't. Apple had truly named their new device the iPad.

Rumors of Apple's new device have been circulating the Internet for months now. Some thought it would be called the iTablet. Others the iSlate. I'm pretty sure no one came up with the iPad.

Apple iPad

I wish I could share with you the new nicknames for the iPad that have flooded Twitter and Facebook since its announcement yesterday. But I want to keep this blog post clean and safe for work so suffice it to say if you walk down the feminine hygiene aisle in any grocery or drug store you will start to get a hint as to some of the new nicknames.

In fact in some cities, the nicknames were trending higher than the real name.

But despite it's horrible name, there still seems to be genuine interest in the iPad from a lot of people. What do you think? Are you planning on buying an iPad? Do you like the name? What name would you have come up with? Leave a comment below and let me know.

P.S. If you want all of the glitzy details I left out about the new iPad, here are some links that will get you what you want:

  • I probably should have commented anonymously, so please no hate mail!  This is just my opinion which you may or may not share.
This is really just a large iPhone… many people agree the iPhone is a great device, a game changer, and is truly innovative.  the iPad is that very same device put on a photo copier and enlarged.  Sure it has a different processor and a few other things, but largely it is the same device. (Missing the camera and phone, of course)

I personally don’t get it and don’t have a use for the device.  If I get the opportunity to play with one, certainly I will, but have no plans of rushing out and buying one… anyone who has an iPhone and a laptop probably doesn’t need one… but I’ve been wrong once or twice before.

Well, I’m a few days behind in adding my two cents, but I was disappolinted that the device didnt contain a phone.  My issue is - I’m over 50 and the screens of these smart phones are simply not big enough.  I surf the web, I read email, I tweet, I text - and I’m constantly squinting, most of the time I need to add my CVS reading glasses to be able to read the screen.  I want a device the size of a Kindle that is a PHONE - and I am not alone.  We dont need a Jitterbug.

  • I’m with Marla.  No way can I afford an iPad, even if its functions suited my needs - but I don’t have an iPhone for the reason she cites.  TOO SMALL a screen.
    Kindle’s screen is great… :-)

  • @asudduth - No, you are not alone with your opinion. I share it with you. As shiny and cool as the iPad looks, I won’t be rushing out to get one on release day. I’m simply blown away that it is nothing more than a giant iPhone that you can read books on. And the fact that you can’t multitask on it is unforgivable.

  • Marla, just because you mentioned it, I’m getting you a Jitterbug for your birthday! :)

  • First of all...Maria- nothing personal at all, but you gave me the vison of a bunch of seniors walking around talkung into their iPads as phones! These GIANT things on their ears....can you picture it?? Come on, I know if you can, you just chuckled at the thought of granny “on” her Ipad! Anyway, yeah its pricey, yeah itsjust a big itouch, yeah apple has tricked us into something they just threw on the tech photocopy machine and hit the zoom 300% button, but I’m still gettin one :o)
