What’s the Emergency? Understanding Blinking Lights on Your Cable Modem
Cable modems are extremely popular for providing high speed, always-on access to the Internet. Once a cable modem is set up, there is usually little work required to keep it functioning reliably. However, all those flashing lights on the front leave one to wonder, "What's going on in there?" After all, we've all been conditioned to interpret flashing lights as warning signs, i.e. emergency vehicles, traffic signals, electronics errors, and more.
Steady and Ready
Not every cable modem is exactly the same, but most should have a power light. A steadily lit power light indicates that your modem is on and ready to use.
You also should find a light labeled "online" or "cable." When steadily lit, this light indicates that your modem has a good connection with the Internet. You may see this light flash temporarily as the modem establishes its connection, but in general you'll find a steady light giving you the go-ahead to surf away.
If slow downloads, missing emails or other reliability issues cause you to suspect an Internet connection problem, start by checking the online/cable light. If it's flashing, then it's likely that your modem is not maintaining a steady Internet connection.
Before you spend half your day on hold with your cable company or other Internet service provider (ISP), first try unplugging the modem, waiting a few seconds, then plugging it back in. This forces the modem to re-sync with your ISP, which may give you back a steady light and solid connection. However, if the light is still blinking, it may be time to report the problem.
Approved for Activity
Other lights on your cable modem are specifically designed to appear "active" by flashing during data transmissions. For example, you'll have one or two lights labeled "send," "receive" or "activity." Lights with these names will blink rapidly as information travels from your computer to the Internet and back.
Know Your Lights
Below are descriptions of the lights on a couple of popular cable modem models. As you will see, the names for the lights are slightly different, but each modem has a similar set of lights indicating similar functions. If you have questions about your cable modem's lights, start by checking your user guide. If you don't still have it, most manufacturers also make them available online. That's assuming, of course, that you still have a good Internet connection!

| Online: Scanning for a network connection (flashing); The startup process is complete (steady/on) |
Cable LED Green. The Cable LED flashes when the Cable Modem is establishing a connection to your cable ISP. It is solidly lit when the Cable Modem is synchronized with your cable ISP |
| PC/Activity: Transmitting or receiving data (flashing); A device, such as a computer or hub, is connected to the USB or Ethernet connectors on the back panel. (steady/on) |
Ethernet LED Green. The Ethernet LED lights up when the Cable Modem is connected to your computer or network through the Ethernet port. It flashes when there is activity on the Ethernet port. |
| USB LED Green. The USB LED lights up when the Cable Modem is connected to your computer or network through the USB port. It flashes when there is activity on the USB port. |

| Standby: This light does not flash; Internet service is blocked because the Standby button was pressed. If this light is on, all other lights are off. |
